6 Productive Habits of Successful Students

Written By ELTOP on Friday, 25 September 2015 | 12:28

There are no short-cuts, no magic beans, no magic wands or hidden treasures. Myths exist only in lore. What is real is the work you put in, your perspiration, your burning desire to achieve your dream and shine as bright as the brightest stars. There are no walls nor obstacles to chain your dreams to the earth. And yet, there is that common enemy, time! Time can neither be defeated nor can there be a truce. The battle wages on and on. The weak fall prey to the cunning tricks of time. The strong and mighty, walk around in shining armour, unafraid. If you want to succeed learn from the best the secrets to tackle your biggest fears.

1. Be Proactive: Abraham Lincoln once said “  things may come to those who wait, but only things that were left by those who hustle  ”. Successful students live by those words. They hustle, raise their hands, ask doubts, talk to their teachers, and ask for extra assignment. They are in short proactive. Some of you may find it difficult to speak up, but to get where you want to be you have to hustle. It may not be a great leap but baby steps. Try speaking up and you will see the difference.

2. Be Regular:  “  We are what we do repeatedly. Excellence then is not an act but a habit  ”. Make studies a habit, not something your parents or teachers force you to do. Just like you brush your teeth everyday and not when someone forces you to, you can make studies a habit. It can be anything between an hour everyday to ten hours a day, depending on your capacity. Remember more does not necessarily mean better.

3. Quality over Quantity: The biggest myth surrounding any entrance exam, specially JEE is that you need to study 14 hours a day.  I can’t even tell you how wrong that is. What is important is that develop insight in that topic, and I say topic because that is the brick you use to build your dreams. Look at what is taught not as part of a subject, but as something you must understand and learn, be it Math, Physics, Chemistry or any other subject.

4. Listen to your Teachers and Talk to them: I can’t stress this point enough. They are your teachers because they know better; they have seen everything that you are going through. Talk to them , discuss your problems ,not just  your prep related problems but you anxieties related to your family, relationship etc. It will help you keep things in perspective.

5. Plan your time: If you fail to prepare then prepare to fail. Chant this every time you feel like delaying your work. Remember JEE tests everything from your intelligent to your perseverance. So if you feel you lack in one department, you can make up for it in another.

6. Plan your Free Time: I know it sounds a bit weird, but believe me a high intensity fun session is way better than passive time waste, when  you sit and imagine what you will do when you will get into IIT/AIIMS etc.

Hope these tips will help you in your prep and beyond.
